Microbes form brightly colored biofilms in almost any aquatic environments - from rocks to the surfaces of teeth (as dental plaque). Mats are biofilms that are formed on a large scale. Such structures form when microbes secrete sticky sugar and protein polymers that hold the biofilms together. The gelatinous material provides protection allowing less tolerant species to survive under the extreme conditions where the mats form. There are many kinds of mats, from loosely formed clumps of algae, to massive, gelatinous structures extending for many meters. Within the Park, it is possible to see mats which are green, yellow, red, brown, darkbrown - and many other colors. They form on sediments, sinter, travertine, rocks or float in water.
